Laura Almasy, PhD
The focus of Laura’s research is development and application of statistical genetic methods for the localization, identification, and characterization of genetic effects on common, complex diseases and related quantitative risk factors. She directs the Genetic Analysis Workshop (GAW), an international forum for development and testing of statistical genetic methods. On the applied side, Laura is involved in studies of schizophrenia, alcohol dependence and other addiction, and cardiovascular disease and related risk factors, as well as studies of normal variation in brain structure and function. Previously, she was a Professor in the South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Laura received her PhD in Genetics from Yale University and her BA in Biology and Psychology from Swarthmore College.
