Transcriptional enhancers are regulatory DNA sequences that play a critical role in normal and disease development. Recent large-scale genomics projects such as the ENCODE and Epigenome roadmap projects have generated thousands of maps of putative functional DNA elements. However, the datasets generated by these projects are not fully utilized by the research community due to a number of technical challenges. By integrating thousands of genomics datasets, the Tan lab, in collaboration with investigators at the Johns Hopkins University, has developed a user-friendly, interactive online database, EnhancerAtlas.org, to facilitate the analysis of enhancers for different cell and tissue types in human. A series of analytic tools were also developed to extract, compare and visualize the enhancers annotated in the database.
